Memorial

I lost a brother, younger, four years ago at the end of this month.  We, Mami & his sisters, have set a Christmas tree in his memory as well as toasted & let go of balloons on days which we celebrate his memory together.  I want to do something different that the whole family, he left four children, can do together.  Those who have lost loved ones unexpectedly, and can sympathize, could you suggest activities, please.
Thank you, MUCHO.

Holiday Preparations

Thinking, thinking, thinking, what to do next to leave without worries for the holidays.  Hmmm, first, enjoy a wonderful party.  I did!  My hubby & I went to a friend's super 40th bash at the Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington, CT on Saturday.  The catering was simply sweet, really (Bacardi drenched chocolate mini-cones, YUM).  The band (SugarBand, love watching them play), was super-hot.  The space was well aired & decored.  I loved dancing all night!  Happy Birthday Doug, have a blessed year.
Alhora, it's time to sit through six classes' quarter worth of pix and video to edit through iMovie for the pre-vaca celebration (less expensive than buying each student/teacher gifts). I'll have some of the students help me, that way they can become familiar with the program, and be able to teach a friend how to use it later; and I won't have to make all the choices myself.  Can you believe the first quarter has ended; and so, soon will 2009.
Happy Holidays, everyone!

Push on Precious

Idea, great for hesitant readers that are interested in Precious.  I agree w/ Tyler Perry & Oprah, it's an impactful film; and many more of us should support it.  In the classroom, The Color Purple has been part of the venacular since its publishing;  easier to watch than read for many students.  Sapphire's Push, and William-Garcia's Everytime a Rainbow Dies, along with The Color Purple  make a good theme based Literature Circle in which each group could work on the strengths and personalities of various characters, as well as engage on great topic discussions of rape, lost innocence, parental abuse, and other issues lended by each of these books.  Would love your thoughts..

George Dawson, Life is So Good

It's an easy read, easy to relate biography of a centurian.  The appeal of George's story is that only after being prompted by the century's news' healines does George share his memories, non related to the issues, just personal and seemingly ordinary.  The tenth graders I'm reading the book with learn different views about Civil Rights issues, presidencies, the Industrial Revolution, and so much more. Race is the greatest underlying topic; but, setting and meeting goals is another as we learn how George began to read for the first time at the age of 98.  Reading Life is So Good also provides opportunities for projects on the Confederacy States, Black leaders, Anti-slavery, Illiteracy, Railroads, etc.   Add to the Reading List, under teaching with a fun to read text.
